Sholver is a large ex-local authority housing estate on the rural fringe of Oldham. It is a ‘Radburn’ layout typology popular in the sixties and seventies. HLP undertook a large scale masterplan which explored the potential for new development as well as options for the earlier housing stock.

A series of new build sites are being brought forward, the first of which is Coleridge Road redevelopment to be followed by schemes at Hodge Clough and Pearly Bank. All of these schemes occupy sites of previously demolished sixties blocks which have failed.

The new schemes are of a contemporary style with a large number of house type variants to promote the local housing market by providing high quality new housing with choice and diversity in the housing offer.

HLP have put proposals forward to ‘de-Radburn’ the older housing stock through selective demolition and new build, and environmental improvements to increase car penetration and create ‘safe streets’, eliminating the detrimental effects of the ‘back to front’ Radburn layout such as the maze of narrow alleyways.
