The Derwent Building brief was to design a bespoke coffee-brunch outlet for Hope University on a pan European theme. The cafe hugs a central two storey light well creating two distinctive coffee areas, one with soft couches & comfort lighting overlooking the quadrangle whilst the other caters for placing orders and high volumes of students from the Eden Lecture Theatre.

HLP’s European styled café at Hope University’s Derwent extension targets a wide audience and frames a picturesque courtyard, setting a tranquil scene for cultural relaxation. Various teaching facilities mix users together to celebrate a multitude of lifestyles. The café intervention injects an ‘espresso culture’ deep into a two storey plan cleverly split by a daylight void segregating café, lounge and foyer.
Careful control of materials and colour sensitively reinforces depth and direction. The lighting design varies the café mood according to natural light fluctuations while evening ambience can change via scene sets, to flavour the tone of conferences.
