The Rockfield area is a historic part of Anfield consisting of large terraced houses close to Liverpool Football Club and Stanley Park. The refurbishment of these properties tackled a number of challenges due to the scale of the houses and their poor condition. These large terraced houses of 2 and 3 storeys had large outriggers and small yards. To create a new dwelling of a manageable size a number of strategies were employed; where outriggers were in poor condition, they were removed to create garden spaces, where roof structures were replaced, the attic spaces were mothballed to create good sized 3 bedroom homes.
The facades of the buildings, which include large sandstone bay windows were stripped back of paint and render to reveal the existing brickwork. The front boundary treatments were repaired and restored with ‘Artstone’ copings and railings added. The fabric of the building was insulated and brought up to modern standards with high quality kitchens and bathrooms fitted.
The historic Rockfield neighbourhood has been regenerated to modern standards whilst retaining the heritage character and splendor of these large terraced properties. The refurbishment programme by Your Housing Group has stimulated private investment in other properties with the assistance of enveloping grants from the Local Authority to create a model neighbourhood regeneration project.
