Conventions in primary school design were challenged through the design of this project which comprises both infant and junior schools. The design was conceived and developed through an extensive consultation process including staff, pupils and the LEA. Design decisions have been focused through a child’s perspective to produce a stimulating, yet safe and secure environment.
The layout of the building is clear and legible, based on two linear wings, and introduces natural light and views of the sky at the core of the building. The roof is butterfly shaped, reducing in scale towards a glazed interior ‘street’ which provides shared resources and makes indoor play a joy, even on the wettest of days. Shared open-plan teaching areas lie below the lowest part of the roof, drawing the scale down to child size.
Each classroom benefits from a timber mezzanine, providing additional teaching space and a break-out zone for teachers and assistants.
The school is a flagship for Merseyside Primary Education and receives excellent reviews from all who visit the campus.
