Liverpool's Edge Lane development is a key element in the city’s Housing Renewal Initiative, creating a new gateway into the city. HLP has been responsible for the scheme’s urban design producing a Design Code, Masterplan, and detailed architectural and landscape design.
The urban design approach includes the concept of a ‘spatial journey’ as a dramatic entrance to the city, in which a range of spatial experiences, vistas and views are defined and reinforced through the new urban framework. The character of new street types and spaces was then designed with the Edge Lane frontage itself offering a robust new tree lined urban form to align and enclose the new road corridor, along with pedestrian priority ‘green routes’, mews, and new squares and public spaces.
The scheme builds on connections to the University and the hospital as well as the north-south connections to the city, and compliments the heritage of the area, respecting the adjacent conservation area and listed buildings.
It responds to the natural topography and the sweep of the newroad, with the progression of unfolding vistas culminating in a panoramic view over the city.
